For the past six months, I’ve been trying to come up with a way to produce videos that will be:
– Easy to make;
– Deeply connected to writing;
As you might expect, it’s not easy. A few authors out there have video channels on YouTube that talk about writing. That’s not really what I want to do, as that mostly only reaches writers. I wanted to come up with something that can be watched by anyone.
I previously came up with the idea of a quiz, where four authors compete to create a story. It wasn’t really an idea that could go anywhere. The logistics of getting four authors onto a video chat together were just too complicated. What I needed was a show that needed the minimum number of authors possible and could be recorded at any time.
Over Christmas, I first saw Epic Rap Battles of History: http://www.youtube.com/user/ERB
That’s when it all clicked together. The show should be a battle between two authors. The authors should battle back and forth in an email chain and then record the results. They could take their time with it, recording whenever they liked. They didn’t have to connect up on Skype or a Google hangout. They could even use their video cameras, if they have one, instead of a webcam. So the quality of video and audio would be better.
In the past day, I’ve recorded a very rough example. The contrast on one of the recordings is messed up, but since this is only a demo, you’ll just have to ignore that:
This is just me against myself. I wrote and recorded it quickly as a proof of concept. Obviously there will be more work put into the actual battles.
Which brings me to the point of this post: Are you an author and do you want to create a Legendary Author Battle?
