Mixtape for week 20, 2013

It’s been a pretty sparse week as far as music is concerned. Almost all the new releases have been absolute pants. Instead, I’ve mostly been listening to some older stuff. Here’s my top ten songs I’ve been listening to this week:

Louis Prima – Just A Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody (Medley)

Genre: Crooner, I guess.

Info: A song with sad lyrics. Louis Prima doesn’t sound too unhappy to be a gigolo, but the lyrics tell a different story. There is a nice counterpoint between the text and the singing.

Ennio Morricone – The Braying Mule

Genre: Soundtrack

Info: Ennio Morricone is a genius, pure and simple. The fact that he writes soundtrack music instead of orchestral might cause people to overlook that fact, but the sheer breadth and quality of his music speaks for itself. This is a great new tune for Django Unchained that echoes back to his cowboy soundtracks of the sixties and seventies.

Knife Party – Internet Friends – VIP

Genre: Electronic

Info: I imagine this is what it would sound like if GLaDOS from Portal was stalking you.

John Williams – The Imperial March – Darth Vader’s Theme

Genre: Soundtrack

Info: After Ennio Morricone, I was in the mood for more soundtrack music and who better than John Williams. I dare you to listen to this and not smile.

John Murphy – In the House – In a Heartbeat (2012 Remaster)

Genre: Soundtrack

Info: I have listened to this track at least fifty times. John Murphy doesn’t have a lot of stuff available on Spotify, but this tune is amazing.

She & Him – I’ve Got Your Number, Son

Genre: Rock/Pop

Info: When I read Zooey Deschanel had written and was singing in a duo with M. Ward, I was skeptical. Most actor/actress music just isn’t as good as music from musicians. However, this is nice, upbeat pop music that I really enjoyed. It helps that I think she’s a sweetheart.

Ratatat – We Can’t Be Stopped

Genre: Instrumental

Info: A sleepy, sliding song that makes you want to sway to the music.

TNGHT (Hudson Mohawke x Lunice) – Goooo

Genre: Electronic

Info: A stomping song that brings to mind cheering crowds. Would work well in a sports movie, in my opinion, for while the home team is stamping the opponents into the dirt (Metaphorically).

R.A. The Rugged Man – Definition of a Rap Flow (Albee 3000)

Genre: Hip-hop

Info: A really great, old school rap. Rugged can rap faster than anyone I’ve heard recently.

Team Sleep – Ever

Genre: Indie

Info: An older indie song, but not one I’d heard before. This by no means brings anything new to the table, but I really enjoyed it.
