Wow, I was not expecting this book to be the game changer that it is. Chris Fox was on the Sell More Books Show podcast this week, and I decided to pick up his book based on that. Essentially, his approach is to analyse the market for a book before ever writing one.
Market research isn’t a new topic, but his method of doing it for books was certainly new to me. As was his attitude to writing sequels or finishing a series. To paraphrase him: if no one is reading it, why are you writing it?
That’s not to say he’s advocating writing a Hunger Games or Harry Potter clone. His suggestion is to research all the sub-genres you’d be interested in writing in, and picking the one most likely to sell. After all, if it sells, then you gain more readers and can then go on to write whatever you like in a few years time with them at your back.
I have to admit, I’m very interested to try out Chris Fox’s approach. It’s something I’ve never done before: research the market before writing. Until now, I’ve just been writing the books I’d like to read.
As he mentions in the book, this approach will be controversial for some, but it was revelatory for me. It’s also a short read and cheap, so there’s no reason not to at least give it a read with an open mind.
