Thoughts on Da Vinci’s Demons Season 1, Episode 5

Warning: Spoilers for Da Vinci’s Demons Season 1, Episode 5

A somewhat slower episode, but an excellent one nonetheless. In this episode we get to see the consequences of last week’s arrest. Da Vinci is in prison and going on trial for buggery. He seems to be unravelling as we watch, slowly going insane from the conditions in the prison. The whole episode is a testament to Tom Riley’s acting, as he plays it incredibly believably, going from insane to commanding a short time near the end of the episode.

This episode also featured the first time the show has been ahead of me. I didn’t put together the explosive qualities of the bat guano until they used it. When you then think back, you can see Leonardo put two and two together quickly to get himself put in solitary confinement.

There was no Riario in this episode, but we very much felt his influence on the citizens of Florence. Trying to discredit the Medici’s and Da Vinci almost worked, both pulling through on sheer intelligence and charm.

The Medici plotline was interesting, covering them securing the business of the Spanish crown. It was nice to see Lorenzo sweat for once, instead of being the one in charge.

I also very much liked the moments with Giulino taking charge. Both winning the fight handily with his brother and making the right choice in the showing of the play. He may be headstrong, but he seems to be right quite a lot. Giulino refers back to Becchi’s death, further underscoring that Lorenzo is not as smart as he thinks he is.

Which brings up a question, is Lorenzo really as smart as people say he is. So far, he seems to have been outthought by quite a lot of people. His own lover is not only a spy, but also Leonardo’s lover. Riario seems to have him well under control, if it wasn’t for Leonardo. Lorenzo has won out more due to the people around him than his own intellect. He must be a good businessman to have gotten to his position, but I’m not sure he’s a good leader.

This episode was an excellent example of what this show does right and seems to be doing more and more of. Being smart, witty and fast paced.
